This module is almost exaclty what i am looking for, except i am not sure how i can allow users to submit reviews if they are not an admin.
Is this possible?
Also, do you have any sort of instruction for this tool?
Fantastic and if i use it on my site, a donation is sure to come!
Basicly NDRevies was made for higher end sites where only key people are allowed to do reviews. I dont know of any reviews site that accepts reviews from just anyone that logs on.
Doh sorry on the instructions not being in the file.
Just to make sure things are straight. The reviews module we have running here is a new version. Its totally different than the one we have in the downloads. Has the same options plus a ton of additional things added in to make things easier for review inputs.
you said to set up a user as admin and only allow them access to the reviews.
i have the admin permissions page open but of course ndrevew is not listed as one of the allowable items.
any idea how to do this?
these are the only ones showing:

incidently i am setting up a community where it will be driven, hopefully, bu the users. i want them to be able to submit a review and have others submit comments (that's an option that should be available if you dont ahve that built in the next version).
anyways, if you can help out with the above question, that would be Great!
i'll be watching.
also, i assume the v2.0 will have an upgrade script?
On the allowing acces to reviews. Hes talking about when you add an admin to the site. You put in their name, email and so forth, there are check boxes for the modules they they will have access to. So in this case you would only check Reviews and nothing else.
On the users inputing the reviews. If your serious about making it so that the everyday person can add the review then some major changes will need to be made to make this happen and be secure while doing so. I DO NOT recommend allowing users to have access to any script that has upload features in it unless you are totaly 100% sure its fully secured. The upload features in both versions of our Reviews modules are not 100% ours and allowing public access to them is something that we have always been against. This does not mean something cant be done to achieve what your wanting. But it does mean things will have to be coded in a different manor.
We have and still are toying with the idea of adding comments. But to be honest I am not one that likes the idea. I have actually went into more than one site and stripped the comment sections out of modules simply because the users spammed them. What I would suggest in this situation is, Create a reviews section in your forums and then add a new forum for each review and let the users comment on the review there. You could easily add a link to the bottom of the review to say "Discuss this review HERE". This is becoming a very popular practive now.
As far as V2 having an upgrade script from the older version. No it will not have one. Its actually not going to be possible to do a script for this. I wanted to but as the developement came along on V2, we totaly altered the way everything is done. We actually cut the size of the code down and tied a lot of the options together. Doing so made for less fields. I could script it to pull most of the content in but the review would still need to be re-written to go public again. In the earlier version the images are stored seperately, all the upload features are done seperately. With the new one, its all done at the same time.
While typing this up I have been thinking about what your actually wanting. PC and I have built most of our modules to suit our needs or the customers needs. We recently done a complete site (theme, custom modules, blocks, and other modifications) that started us on the new Reviews. I mainly do all custom work for customers. I have done several custom jobs over the years and stick with the customer till they are happy. You obviously like the way the New Reviews module is, if you would like a modified version of it to work the way you want. It can be done.
Straight up right now. With either of the Reviews modules we have. In order for the user to be able to add a review they will have to be given lower level admin status on the site.
The modules would need a complete recode to make it fully public. I already have thoughts on what I can alter, and how I can keep it from being an open door for a hacker. It depends on what you want tho. If you would like to discuss us building you a custom review module to suit you. List out the options you want in the module. What you want the public to have access to and what you want the admins to have access to. If you like our current layout (that is on this site), thats no problem. The cats and stuff are all built into the main side of the modules anyways. This will actually be a larger build than what ours currently is. You can pm me the info or email it either way.
Fantastic explanation and you have modified my requirements in the process.
I think it would be nice for users to be able to write a review, with limited image access. For example, my website is a cigar website.
www.cigarguys.net.
and what i had envisioned was that a single image be uploaded with a review, for example the image might be of a cigar lable, box lid or whatever, and then the user would write up a short review open for discussion in the end where other users could also rate this product.
Tha is what i had envisioned. If this wasnt available, that's not the end of the world as like you said i could put this in the foru,m.
Of course all reviews would need approval and only admins and those people assigned as reviewers could add more indepth reviews with multiple images.
Categories are a must for me as there will be more than just Cigars, we hope to do wines and food and restaurants and wiskeys etc...
I am not sure how much detail you want, or how much you charge for something like this, but this is more of a project site for me and a group of guys, so i dont know that we could pay you much. Might as well get that out of the way up front. If i have to, i wont use the NDreviews 1.0 and i'll wait for 2.0 if we cant do a custom job. I wnat to thank you for offering! there arent too many folks around who would.
as for...

i can do this, but for some reason when i do click reviews, it choose s the old review system and not the new one. do i need to rename something here?
ok on the pricing of a custom module. What I do is take in all the info that I think I need to know and then sit here and try to figure out if I can turn on of my current projects into something that will work for you.
I straight up build what the customer wants and I am always looking at doing it as quick as possible with as little hassle on both ends as possible. I like keeping the file size (actual code) down on the stuff I make. The fees for my (our, lol sorry PC don't mean to sound like "I this and I that") work are very reasonable. Like stated I collect everything ahead of time and then try to shoot a price to the guy and see if its something both of us can work with. Our goal is to simply collect a little money for our time invested in building such things. It helps us pay for our hosting and keeps us on line so we can continue to build such things. We have several repeat customers and stick with them as long as it takes to keep them happy. I have been working with several site owners for several years pretty much giving them 100% support on our work and others work as well. To put a figure on a module (this is just what I have done in previous works), the most I can recall charging for one of my custom modules was 50 or 60 bucks, it took around 2 weeks to build and fine tune to the customers liking.
If your interested in something like this, the best way for me to get an idea of your exact thoughts is to have you type up a sample "review" showing me kind of how you want it shown on the page. Once I see what has to be there I can then think out what I have to do to make that happen. The users options and admin options can be finalized once we see whats needed. On the image, what I think would be best is to do is add in an "A" or "B" type option. "A" would be them supplying a link to the image so that you can grab it, or "B" would be them emailing the image itself to you. That way once the review is submitted you would then have the full edit option (via admin panel) with an image marker stating "image from ????? here" and all you have to do is insert the image and proof read the review for activation. What your wanting is sounding pretty simple. What your speaking of does sound like a more text involved review than actual pictures which will lighten the load on your end.
Categories isn't a problem. Right now my script consists of a max of 16 Categories. These can be fully edited via the admin side of the module. It will only show as many as you want in it. If you would need more added than 16, thats also do able.
For the review, we have ours broken down into sections (like pages) and call on them accordingly. This is where more details will be needed. If your wanting simply one page of content rather than the 3 page layout we have that will alter the code. So the best thing to do when you go to write up your sample review. I would try to do it on something that is going to have the most content you can think of. Example, I would think that a "Restaurant" review would have much more content than a "Cigar" review. So I would do your sample based on a restaurant and not the cigar. This part kind becomes challenging at times depending on your goal, but if you have already seen something on another site that is almost exactly what your wanting a link to that site with some descriptions of what you like and dislike about it will be sufficient info to go off of as well.
OK he he, the our old reviews setup is kind of out of mind right now. I will actually pull open the code and look it over real quick and see if I can see the problem. I have been working on the new reviews for the last 6 months or so and have built a total of 10 modules in that time. LOL I need a bigger hdd in my head . I will reply back shortly on this issue.
What verison of nuke are you running your site on right now? Do you have any addition security addons added to the site?
I cant for the life of me remember.it was an install through Fantastico...Found the version doc...7.6
i have not done any changes to the code with the reviews install,
I like your views and i'll discuss this with my "partners" to see what they decide.
I would try to come up with a generic template that could be used for all reviews.
I dont want to have to choose between 5 different templates. besides, if we decide to add a new category i'd have to create a new template as well.
i figure it would be something simple like
intro
overview
details
conclusion
rating
or something along those lines.
Let me chat with my buds and let you know what we decide.
OK groan sounds good to me. Once you decide on what you want to do I am sure we can work something out.
I got a couple of modules on the slate right now that I need to finalize. (LOL just hit a couple of re-writes on V2 of the reviews module, while we been posting back and forth to each other) But will definately be able to help you out.
On the current NDReviews you have installed. I think the added option of lower level admins wasnt added to that version. I can modify it accordingly if you want me to. I will toss it on one of my test sites and check it out later on tonight. Shouldnt be much of a problem to activate that part tho. I do tink you will be happier with something that is customized more toward what your doing tho.
Once you find out let me know and we can discuss things more. I have all messengers so I will provide the appropriate info depending on which you use or we can chat via email or pm's.
2.0 is getting close to being completed. Its not going to be a pulibc release like 1.x is tho. 2.0 is sporting more functionallity and is by far superior to teh 1.x series. I have 2.0 on a couple sites now including this one. It has so far been running very smoothly.
No on the RSS at this time. That is very well a possibility. It wouldnt really take much to add it into there.
If you would like more details feel free to pm me.
